The body of missing college student William Jacobson in a small pond on campus. Complete article here.

My thoughts and prayers are with William’s family and friends.

Orginal Blog

If any of you have followed my blogs, you know that I have continuously pointed out what a strange “coincidence” it is that so many of our young college aged men have turned up missing. Most of the time they have came from a bar or party, sometime after midnight and somehow end up alone.

On April 27th, 19-year-old William “Willie” Jacobson disappeared from Ithaca, NY after previously attending a party. According to reports, William was last seen walking away from the party around 4:00AM and was believed that he was returning to his dorm room on campus.

According to William’s friend CJ Knowles who was one of the last people to see him before he disappeared, “We have kind of a student effort going on right now. We’ve spent all of last night searching through the woods probably about 40 of us organized last night,” Knowles said.

Jacobson’s friends describe him as a “serial text messager.” When nobody received a message in a few days, they knew they had a problem.

His friends took matters into their own hands after filing a police report, setting up a Facebook alert, and posting fliers. Firefighters, police and volunteers trek through the woods looking for 19-year old Ithaca College freshmen William Jacobson.

Nearly one hundred people are involved in the search.

“Predominately the areas surrounding Ithaca college that a pedestrian could reach on foot. There’s a lot of wooded area in this immediate area. And a lot of hiking trails in the area” says Ithaca Police Chief Ed Vallely.

Police say Jacobsen has been known hike, especially in the South Hill area.

Jacobson was dressed like William Shakespeare as the party was a costume party. The picture shown was taken that night and he was dressed with black slacks, a white button down shirt, dark blue vest and dress shoes.

If you know or see anything you contact police at 607-272-3245, or public safety at 607-274-3333.

*As a sidenote, I have received numerous emails in the past few days regarding the “Smiley Face Gang” and the fact that we may be on to something with these disappearances and drownings being connected. I am NOT saying this disappearance is, but I wanted to address it to let you all know that yes, I am aware of the articles. The latest one can be found here.

Joshua Szostak was a missing college student — he went to the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, and was missing after a late December ’07 party in downtown Albany with friends, who left without him not sure where he was.

His body was recently found in the Hudson River. Albany sits on the Hudson River, in case you’ve never been here.

I am going to take a different tact right now and ask something on my mind.

IF all these missing young male college students are not the victims of crime, could someone with experience/knowledge tell me what other explanation there is?

I’ll be honest and say I don’t see one, but it’s helpful to hear other explanations and then think it through again.

Nicholas Garza is missing from Middlebury, VT, two hours from Albany, and now William Jacobson from Ithaca, NY.

Thanks for this site and the opportunity to ask questions.

willie was my friend, i cant believe things like this actually happen. is there a way to start up this investigation again? (meaning the smiley face murders?) because if its a drowning case, it has a connection.

  5. So sorry for your loss Willie’s friend. The investigation into the alledged Smiley Face Gang is still ongoing. Its being persued by a group of retired detectives though and LE is not really taking it seriously. I am sure there is probably some sort of contact info in one of the many articles that have been written as of recent.

You should wait to see what the autopsy results are though, even though I am sure it will be ruled an accidental drowning….

Once again, so sorry to you and to all those that loved Willie. Such a tragedy.

I am so sorry with the lost of another college student, he should not been roaming around the campus without a companion…. it was such a tragedy really…in our legal profession, it should be investigated further…it should be reported to proper authorities in order for the case to be resolved…not with the group of retired detectives. These detectives are now retired in the service,so how can they solve a case if they are now retired…and tell me more about this “Smiley Face Gang”,seems so interested to investigate further…see my site, and…=)rich

I had a class with willie last semester, poetry… anyway, I wasnt close to him, but i remember him being very passionate about everything that he spoke. It is a sad day here on campus. and what used to seem like a realativly safe, and heartwarming place has been transformed. It chills me to think that things of this magnitude can happen so close. Its like a shock to the system. I drove past the pond today on my way to class, police and crime scene tape everywhere. It really hits you hard when you see that stuff. I cant begin to image what his friends and family are going through and I hope that somehow they can find peace.
In lue of recent events on campus, including several armed robberies and acts of violence, I think that we need to take a hard look at our campus safety. I am not blaming them for what has happened, but I think that since ithaca, and the ithaca college community is generally such a peaceful place, the fact that these things can still happen, is overlooked. We have emergency call boxes, and once in a while you see a campus police car drive by, but is that enough?

Prayers go out to this family and his friends. It is unfortunate that when things like this happen this society becomes active instead of proactive.

I’m a friend as well, and while I’m definitely very skeptical of the whole “Smiley Face” thing, I feel as if others are too willing to accept the fact that no foul play was involved. I have a hard time imagining what happened as an accident due to the circumstances. I’m not saying I think that an accident is an impossibility however; I just think that to rule out foul play at this point is premature.
