Orginal Blog

If any of you have followed my blogs, you know that I have continuously pointed out what a strange “coincidence” it is that so many of our young college aged men have turned up missing. Most of the time they have came from a bar or party, sometime after midnight and somehow end up alone.

On April 27th, 19-year-old William “Willie” Jacobson disappeared from Ithaca, NY after previously attending a party. According to reports, William was last seen walking away from the party around 4:00AM and was believed that he was returning to his dorm room on campus.

According to William’s friend CJ Knowles who was one of the last people to see him before he disappeared, “We have kind of a student effort going on right now. We’ve spent all of last night searching through the woods probably about 40 of us organized last night,” Knowles said.

Jacobson’s friends describe him as a “serial text messager.” When nobody received a message in a few days, they knew they had a problem.

His friends took matters into their own hands after filing a police report, setting up a Facebook alert, and posting fliers. Firefighters, police and volunteers trek through the woods looking for 19-year old Ithaca College freshmen William Jacobson.

Nearly one hundred people are involved in the search.

“Predominately the areas surrounding Ithaca college that a pedestrian could reach on foot. There’s a lot of wooded area in this immediate area. And a lot of hiking trails in the area” says Ithaca Police Chief Ed Vallely.

Police say Jacobsen has been known hike, especially in the South Hill area.

Jacobson was dressed like William Shakespeare as the party was a costume party. The picture shown was taken that night and he was dressed with black slacks, a white button down shirt, dark blue vest and dress shoes.

If you know or see anything you contact police at 607-272-3245, or public safety at 607-274-3333.

*As a sidenote, I have received numerous emails in the past few days regarding the “Smiley Face Gang” and the fact that we may be on to something with these disappearances and drownings being connected. I am NOT saying this disappearance is, but I wanted to address it to let you all know that yes, I am aware of the articles. The latest one can be found here.

March 2008 – This Month’s Featured Case – Joshua Cheney Guimond

Posted by KindraLore on February 28, 2008

This Month’s Featured Case

March 2008

Joshua Cheney Guimond

Josh Guimond
Josh Guimond

In my search for information about some of the missing college students I have blogged about recently, I have found many college-age men missing. It’s actually quite shocking to me as I wonder how much is too much for a percentage to be just pure coincidence.

This Month’s Featured Case is about one of those young men. Within two weeks after Halloween in 2002, three college-aged men went missing in a relatively small area of one another.

Chris Jenkins
Chris Jenkins

Chris Jenkins disappeared Halloween night in 2002. Jenkins, 21, was last seen alive at the Lone Tree Bar in Minneapolis. He was a senior and co-captain and goalie of the lacrosse team at the University of Minnesota. At the time of his disappearance he was wearing an American Indian costume. Jenkins left the bar alone in the early hours and some reports state he could have been thrown out of the bar and not allowed back in. His body was found four months later along the Mississippi River. His death was later determined to be a homicide.

Michael Noll
Michael Noll

Three days after Jenkins, 80 miles east on I-94, Michael Noll, a senior at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, disappeared after leaving a college bar. Noll was last seen leaving Nasty Habit Saloon on Water Street between 11:00 and 11:30 p.m. November 6, 2002 after celebrating his 22nd birthday. Like Jenkins, he too left the bar alone in the early hours of the morning intoxicated. Reports state Noll subsequently walked into the house of a neighbor, who told him to leave. His baseball cap was found on her lawn. His body would be later found in the Chippewa River. Noll’s death is believed to be from an apparent drowning but others believe he was murdered.

The Disappearance

Then there was the third. 20-year-old Joshua Cheney Guimond was a Junior and honor student at St John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. On November 9, 2002 Josh attended a small gathering with some friends at Metten Court on the north end of the St. John’s University campus. The last time anyone saw Josh was around 11:00PM that evening. According to reports, he left to go to the bathroom and never returned.

Joshua Missing
Josh Guimond

When he did not return, his friends assumed he walked back to his apartment which would have been a three minute walk. They called but received no answer and assumed he had gone to bed. However, when Josh failed to attend a school function the following day and there was no sign of him, his friends reported him missing.

Josh Guimond’s car was found on campus undisturbed. All his belongings including credit cards and eyeglasses were found in his apartment. At the time of his disappearance, Josh was not wearing a winter jacket nor was he dressed for the cold temperatures of November. Josh had vanished without a trace.

Once Again – Connections or Coincidence?

Many linked these three cases together, as the improbability of so many disappearances in such a short period of time and in such a small area seemed slim. All three men were around the same age, height and build. Their schools — the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, St. John’s University in Collegeville and the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire — all lie close to Interstate Highway 94.

Josh’s family maintains that he would never disappear on his own and friends spoke of him in high regard and Josh’s roommate described him as a ”brilliant student of the law. Fellow band geek. Shrewd politician. A young man with the brightest of futures”. According to all that knew him, Josh had dreams of going to law school one day, had a bright future ahead of him and would never take off on his own nor take his own life.

Authorities however believe that Josh may have been intoxicated and fallen into a body of water and drowned. Neither his body nor any evidence of that has ever been found.

Another theory is that Josh committed suicide. He and his girlfriend of five years had recently broken up. She states that the two had remained friends.

Paul Cheney, Joshua Guimond’s uncle, said he saw similarities in the disappearances. ‘‘Josh and Chris Jenkins look a lot alike,” Mr. Cheney said. ‘‘The three boys have the same build, same height, same coloring. Josh is about 5 feet 10, 170 pounds, with an athletic build. All were well-known on campus, outgoing, bright kids with good grade point averages.”

Where it Stands

The death of Chris Jenkins has never been solved. Joshua Guimond remains missing. The Jenkins family hired a private investigator soon after their son disappeared. Originally when Chris’ body was found, the case had been ruled a drowning. However in 2006, police held a press conference and apologized to the Jenkins family and officially ruled his death a homicide. His case remains open.

Michael Noll’s death was thought to be a drowning but there has been no evidence to conclude what happened the night that he went missing.

The family of Josh Guimond continue the search for their son. On a website devoted to finding their son they state:

Josh did not leave of his own free will. He was without his car, glasses or a coat warm enough for the weather. None of his credit cards have been used and there has been no contact with any friends or family members since that day. Please be on the look-out for Josh. Please let us know if you see him or if you know anything related to his disappearance which might help us find him.

UPDATE 3/14/08 4:48PM

I received an email this morning from a family member of Michael Barbiere about some of the details that have been misconstrued in the media or are just plain false

The following are facts that need to be cleared up in the case of Mike and his disappearance:

  1. Although Mike was drinking the night he went missing, he did NOT have 20 drinks, and in fact was seen in numerous pictures taken and from onward he was drinking WATER.
  2. Mike was wearing an arctic snow-mobile type jacket and hat when he left the bar so he was dressed appropriately for the weather.

There was also mention that within the past few weeks another man (29 year old) has gone missing in Breckenridge as well as a young woman being drugged and raped

I will look into those instances later this eve and possibly update on that. However, I did want to make these facts known, as I know its very important for the families of the missing to have the most accurate information out as possible.

Update 2/28/08 3:41PM

Update on Michael Barbiere. Nick’s mother went to Colorado looking for clues and information on what happened to her son. Police suspended the search for Barbiere after finding no evidence of his whereabouts. During the search, 58 searchers and three dogs found no clues as to where he went.

There is currently a $10,000 reward for the missing man. More here.

Update 2/27/08 10:38PM

An update on this case for Nick Garza. Texas EquuSearch will be aiding in the search for Nicholas Garza and going to Vermont. According to a family member, their arrival has been hampered by the weather. I will update when there is more information available.

There is also a $20,000 reward for information leading to Nick’s whereabouts. Please go to NicholasGarza.org for more information.

See video below regarding Nick Garza’s disappearance.

Original Blog

Is it just me or does anyone else start to see a pattern here? Is it far-fetched or just coincidence that young college age men are disappearing never to be found again?

As I blogged in the Brian Shaffer case and again with Kyle Fleischmann and Justin Gaines. Again with Joshua Szostak, all of these guys are young college students, missing after leaving a party or a bar. Matthew Wilson is another one that vanished recently and the only one that was not reported leaving a bar, party or social event. Where are they going?

Nick Garza

On February 5th Nicholas Garza was last seen around 11:30PM after a social gathering at Middlebury College in Vermont. He was last seen leaving Allen Hall where his dorm room was not wearing a winter coat, his coat later to be found in his room. Reports state he only spent a half and hour at the nearby dorm and was not drinking alcohol. Cell phone records indicate that Nick called a friend shortly after leaving the social gathering but that the friend did not pick up. His cell phone has not been used since. With lots of snow and temperatures dipping into the single digits, it was doubtful he would have been out in the elements for long without a winter jacket. His possessions such as his laptop and ipod remained in his dorm room.

According to reports, Natalie Garza of Albuquerque, N.M., and Nicholas’ mother had not heard from him since February 5th. With the college’s winter break into full swing, being from January 31st to February 10th, Nicholas was not reported missing until a full five days later as it was thought that Nicholas may of left campus for break. Natalie Garza notified campus security Sunday, February 10th when she had not heard from her son in a full week.

Nick was described by family and friends as a good student, highly motivated, a non-partier, a kid who spoke with his mother nearly every day, and a college freshman with a lot of friends.

“He is a socially well-adapted, level-headed child who has a lot to give to this world and really wanted to come here to learn,” his mother, Natalie Garza, said on Wednesday.

Nothing about Nick Garza’s character suggests he would ever run away or hitch a ride with a stranger. No history of mental illness or drug and alcohol problems. No reason to disappear.

“We have found nothing on the background we’ve done on him through family or other students or former acquaintances that anyone had any issues at all. He seemed to be a fairly normal student,” said Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley.

Search crews combed the 350-acre campus but found no sign of Nick Garza.

Police have continued to search snow piles in a number of areas on the campus, looking for Garza or any evidence that might lead to his recovery, Middlebury Police Officer Vegar Boe said.

“Because of all the snow that’s been plowed, those piles are being carefully taken apart,” he said Sunday.

On February 19th over 200 students, faculty and members of the community held a vigil for the freshman college student. Attendees wrote message to the Garza family and lit candles in front of the Mead Chapel.

There have been no leads as to where the 19-year-old has gone.

Michael Barbiere

Alphonse “Michael” Barbiere, 23, has been missing since early Friday, February 8th when friends said he left a bar in blizzard conditions around 1:30AM after having at least 20 drinks at a martini bar in Breckenridge, Colo . Barbiere, who is from New Jersey, was vacationing with friends.

Although more than 2000 miles apart, like Nick Garza, Mike Barbiere left late at night in the snowy conditions without a winter coat. Since Mike’s disappearance many have come forward from the bar he was last seen. None are considered suspects.

Search and rescue teams from as far away as Fort Collins looked all over the Breckenridge area have searched for the 23-year-old man, but found no signs of Michael Barbiere. According to reports I have read, police have written Mike off as being drunk and succumbing to the elements.

Barbiere’s older brother, Bob, said his family is offering $10,000 to anyone with information on his whereabouts.

There have been no signs or leads as to where any of these young men have gone.

Also, while I’m comparing the cases, is it me or do these four guys (Kyle Fleischmann, Justin Gaines, Michael Barbiere and Brian Shaffer) not bare a striking resemblance to each other?

Missing Men

*2/25/08 11:23PM

Normally I put updates at the top of my blogs, but I feel it flows better with this story here. One thing that just dawned on me is this: Justin Gaines was last seen at Wild Bill’s in Duluth, GA on Thursday night, November 1st. (Technically Friday morning at 2:00AM). Kyle Fleischmann disappeared from Buckhead Saloon in Charlotte, NC in the early morning hours of Friday morning at 2:15AM (was at the club also on a Thursday night) on 11/9/07.

Michael Barbiere went missing EARLY Friday morning around 1:30AM. Justin Gaines went missing EARLY Friday (or for those of us that haven’t gone to bed still Thursday, Kyle – same thing. All of them on Thursday night/early Friday morning. All of them the first week of the month.

Brian Shaffer disappeared Friday night (or early Saturday morning – last seen at 1:15AM) on 3/31/06 OR 4/01/06 if you want to get technical (as far as it being the early morning). Also the first week of the month.

In other words, 3 of these guys went missing on the first Thursday night, all technically Friday morning of the month between 1:30 and 2:15AM. One of them was on a Friday night technically Saturday morning (still the first week of the month) at 1:15AM.

This Month’s Featured Case – Brian Shaffer

Posted by KindraLore on January 4, 2008

January 2008

Brian Shaffer

Brian Shaffer

The Disappearance

Brian Shaffer was a second year med student at Ohio State University in the spring of 2006. His mother had battled a devastating and fatal illness with cancer and his girlfriend, Alexis Waggoner had been visiting her family.

Spring Break was about to be in full swing and Brian and his ex roommate Clint Florence headed out that Friday to have some drinks at the local bars.

Brian & Clint
Brian Shaffer and his friend Clint Florence

The two men arrived at the Ugly Tuna Saloon around 9:15PM and had a few shots. He and Alexis spoke on his cell phone around 10:30PM. Brian and Clint then left the Ugly Tuna Saloon around 11:00PM and walked to Short North Tavern and then to another bar around 11:40PM. By 1:15AM they were back at the Ugly Tuna where their evening had begun.

Brian Video 1
Brian returning to the Ugly Tuna

Brian can be seen in the grainy surveillance video returning to the Ugly Tuna around 1:15AM. He can also he seen on the foyer near the escalators speaking with some girls that Clint knew. He then walks out of the bottom right side of the camera and Brian Shaffer disappears into thin air.

Brian Video 2
Brian – last images of him

By 2:00M its closing time. Clint calls Brian on his cell phone and it goes straight to voicemail. He goes to the men’s room and looks for him but Brian is not there either. Eventually Clint assumes Brian has left and he leaves as well.

Saturday, April 1st Alexis continuously tried to call Brian with no luck. The couple had plans to leave town for a Spring Break vacation in Florida that following Monday. By Sunday she was scared and knew something was not right.

A Mystery

One baffling aspect of this case that still perplexes law enforcement today is the fact that Brian could not be seen on surveillance leaving the bar after he had re-entered. Both bar exits are covered by cameras, as is the escalator in which you see Brian enter and leave and enter again.

Outside the bar, out of camera view, are stairs and an elevator that lead to the first floor. Once on the first floor, the only way out, without being seen on tape, would be through a service exit that leads to a construction site, with doors to the street.

Exit Ugly Tuna
Only exit not covered by cameras

Brian’s credit cards, bank account and cell phone have not been used. There have been no significant leads to indicate what happened that Friday night.

Connections or Coincidence?

Since 1997 at least eight college men were found dead in local rivers after a night out at local taverns or bars in the mid-west. Many started to wonder if there was a serial killer in our midst, preying on vulnerable inebriated men.

The series of deaths began in July 1997, when the body of 19-year-old Richard Hlavaty was found in the Mississippi. In 2004 the body of 21-year-old UW-La Crosse wrestler Jared Dion was also found in the Mississippi river. In September 2006 UW-La Crosse basketball player Luke Homan was again found in the Mississippi and a month later police classified the death of Chris Jenkins, a University of Minnesota student as a murder and not accidental.

According to a criminologist at Minnesota’s St. Cloud State University, more than twenty college-aged men had drowned after disappearing from bars or parties since 1997 in an area from Minnesota to Ohio.

However, in September of 2007 after La Crosse police asked the FBI’s National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime to review their investigations, the FBI stated that they had found no evidence to support a theory of a serial killer and contributed the deaths to excessive drinking. Some are not convinced however and think they police are trying to avoid publicity.

One name that has continuously been linked with Brian Shaffer’s disappearance is that of Anthony “Tony” Luzio. On the evening of July 3, 2005 Tony had gone to a friend’s house to play cards. Afterwards he stopped at a local hangout and around 2:30AM Tony and a group of friends went to a party, one mile from Tony’s parents house in Powell, Ohio.

Tony was last seen leaving the party at 4:00AM, presumably to his apartment. That was the last time anyone ever saw Tony Luzio again. His 2004 Honda Civic is also missing and has never been recovered. He disappeared just 15 miles from where Brian Shaffer disappeared.

In November of 2005 29-year-old Mohamed Rihani also disappeared in the same close proximity after leaving his residence in the vicinity of Riverview Drive and Olentangy River Road in Columbus, Ohio. He too was driving a Honda Civic, black in color. Both he and his vehicle have vanished.

Where it Stands

Since Brian Shaffer’s disappearance, other college-aged men have also disappeared, although not close in vicinity to the disappearances of the previous mentioned men.

In November of 2007 18-year-old Justin Gaines disappeared from Wild Bill’s in Duluth, Georgia and just one week later Kyle Fleischmann disappeared from the Buckhead Saloon in Charlotte, North Carolina. December 23, 2007 21-year-old Joshua Szostak disappeared after leaving the Bayou Café on North Pearl Street in Albany, New York.

It does seem that young males have a false sense of security when being out and about, thinking that nothing can happen to them. All these young men that were mentioned were in good shape and seemed very capable of taking care of themselves. However, once alone and intoxicated, one can become vulnerable and a victim.

Today Brian’s father (as well as all the other families of these missing men) continues the quest to find answers and to find his son. After all, not knowing is the hardest.

Vanished into thin air – Matthew Wilson

Matthew Wilson - Missing

Update 6/15/08 11:23AM

Matthew Wilson’s vehicle has been located in Berkeley, California on Saturday. It had apparently been abandoned for some time. In reading the article, it looks as though LE believe Matthew may have left of his own accord due to the fact of some odd purchases that were made shortly before his disappearance.

According to the article:

Matthew Wilson withdrew $500 from his checking account and bought charcoal and matches, a car cover and window shade before his disappearance, prompting police to believe he may have left on his own accord.

“Some of the purchases he made that were made before he left may have been purchases someone would have made if they were going to do some traveling,” Taylor said.

His mother Cathy Wilson said it would be out of character for her son to leave without communicating with his family.

She now believes, however, that he may have left on his own volition.

“If he’s safe and he’s away because he wants to be, that’s fine,” she said. “I just want to know that he’s safe.”

Original Blog

Just as in my previous blog about Joshua Szostak, once again another college student is missing. This time it’s Matthew Wilson. Matthew’s case is different than Joshua, Kyle or Justin’s though. All three of their disappearances involved leaving a bar late a night.

By all accounts Matthew did not drink, nor smoke. He drove a conservative vehicle and normally walked to and from the campus to his apartment. Matthew was an excellent student, making straight A’s and maintaining a high grade point average.

Matthew was a Computer Science major at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He had an off campus apartment he shared with a roommate, Elliot Harwell. Harwell first noticed Matthew missing on December 16th. He states that he last saw him the day before on the 15th around noon (I have read another article that states he last saw him on the 14th) working on his finals in his room. Police later learned that Matthew failed to drive a friend to the airport on the 15th as he had promised.

With finals, Elliott Harwell too was busy and reportedly left the apartment and did not return until the next day, December 16th. Two days later he filed a report with the Rice police.

Matthew just disappeared into thin air.

At first authorities thought that Matthew was probably hold up somewhere, studying for finals. Now however, almost two weeks later with finals come and gone, Christmas over, they know something is horribly wrong.

Although there have been no signs of foul play, Matthew did withdraw $100 and $400 from his bank account at 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. from an automated teller machine in a shopping center where students often do their laundry on December 14th. His family and authorities said that was an unusual transaction. His car is also missing.

His mother maintains that not only had she never known him to make such a large withdraw at once, she also says Matthew had paid December’s rent and Matthew still had another $1,000 left in his account, which has remained untouched.

Authorities have stated that there is nothing to suggest that Matthew was coerced or made to withdraw the money as he was back in his apartment that evening with his roommate.

Matthew’s cell phone was left in his apartment, however his backpack is gone.

Matthew Wilson is described as white, 5 ft. 7 inches tall, 135lbs, with green eyes, glasses and a curly red beard and hair. His car is a 2004 silver Dodge Neon with Oklahoma license plate 863 MCZ.

Houston Crime Stoppers has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to felony charges in the case.

Another College Student Gone – Where is Joshua Szostak?

Posted by KindraLore on December 28, 2007

Joshua Szostak

Update 4/22/08

A body found in the Hudson river is believed to be that of Joshua Szostak. The body was taken to St. Peter’s Hospital where an autopsy is scheduled on Wednesday. Miller said authorities expect they will be able to officially identify the body and determine the cause of death at that time. He said the investigation is now being handled jointly by Albany and state police.

The discovery occurred just days after a special drone plane was brought in to help search for Szostak and Jaliek Rainwalker, a 12-year-old who has been missing for months from Washington County.

Complete article here.

Thanks to Kim and Stan for the heads up. My heart goes out to Josh’s family and friends. It will be terrible if this turns out to be Josh, but at the same time, at least they have some sort of closure. Not knowing is the hardest.

Update 2/28/08 6:50PM

See video of Josh Szostak:

Update 1/23/08 7:28PM

Last Sunday a fund raiser was held at Shaker-Loudonville Fire Department was held to help raise money for the mounting costs in finding missing 21-year-old Josh Szostak. The event’s organizer Gina Urban, was hoping to meet the goal of $20,000. No word on if they met that goal.

Josh’s father, Bill Szostak has now hired a private investigator to aid in the search for his son. There has also been a website set up offer up-to-date information on the search as well as being able to leave an anonymous tip.

How to help:

Scott Waldman can be reached at 545-5080 or by email at swaldman@timesunion.com

You can also make a contribution to the Joshua Szostak Search and Rescue Fund at any Pioneer Savings Bank branch.

Update 1/6/08 11:57AM

Here is the latest article. No new info to report except for the fact that Josh’s family have now hired a private investigator. That investigator has set up an anonymous tip line, which will be answered 24 hours a day.

If you have any information, you’re asked to call (518) 424-7236. Again, the family would like to stress that this tip line is not affiliated with any law enforcement agency and all calls will remain confidential.

I was emailed and told to ad this, which is essentially what is written above. Press Release Josh Szostak ________________________________________________________________________________

Update 1/4/08 8:19PM

The damaged and stolen SUV that police originally believed may been connected to the disappearance of Josh “The Stag” Szostak failed to yield any clues that Josh had ever been inside of the vehicle. Police were hoping that the fingerprints found in the vehicle may provide clues of who was actually in the vehicle, most importantly Josh. However, there is no evidence that the SUV is connected to Josh Szotstak in any way. No finger prints of Josh’s were found in the vehicle.

Now investigators are conducting tests on DNA samples taken in the vehicle to rule out with certainty that Josh was or was not inside the vehicle. Samples have been sent to the State Police Forensic Investigation Center in Albany, but no word of when those results will be back.

The DEC Dodge Durango was found around 1:40AM on December 23rd at the entrance to Dawson’s Garage and Scarano boat storage. There had been damage to the undercarriage of the vehicle. Josh’s cell phone was found in the street near the facility.

The last known image of Josh Szostak was taken by a surveillance camera at 12:15AM December 23rd at the corner of State and North Pearl streets. The Bayou Cafe in which Josh had left is just blocks away. The last usage of his cell phone was a text message at 12:17AM.

Bill Szostak, Josh’s father remains focused on a scent picked up from tracking dogs from a volunteer search crew which indicated that at some point Josh was on Park Ave. before turning south onto the west side of Martin Luther King Blvd. in Lincoln Park. After about 100 feet the track crosses the street and then stops, maybe indicating that Josh got into a vehicle.

Next week authorities plan to search the Hudson river with a new sonar system donated to Troop G dive team last month by the Center of Hope.

Original Blog

Someone pointed me to this case and asked why I had not blogged about Joshua.

“Why haven’t you put Joshua Szostak on your website….same story as Kyle and Justin. Check it out. Joshua is from Albany NY and just went missing several days ago after leaving a bar.”

I had read about this story days ago, but frankly I was thrown off by the reports that he had stolen a car. After reading that article I thought it was probably some reckless little punk and he was running from the law and would be found soon.

However, after reading up on this case today, I find that not to be the deal at all. 21-year-old Joshua Szostak was last seen after midnight Sunday morning, leaving the Bayou Café on North Pearl Street in Albany, New York. Joshua got separated from his friends and was not seen again.

Joshua’s cell phone was found the next day in a state D.E.C. parking lot as well as a stolen D.E.C. sport utility vehicle that police say Szostak may have driven and then abandoned. The police have since softened their words of stating Joshua stole the vehicle after his family voiced their outrage.

The car’s undercarriage was damaged and the car was left at the end of an access road in the southernmost portion of the port off Normanskill Street.

“He’s a happy-go-lucky kid”, said Szostak’s Aunt, Ann Strizz. “He’s obligated to his family, he’s obligated to his job. He’s obligated to his academics and his school work. It’s totally out of character, totally out of character.”

Joshua was attending Hudson Valley Community College this past semester, with plans to return to SUNY Plattsburgh to study journalism.

Joshua was known to have been carrying a large amount of cash on him at the time (over $500). His family still believes that someone robbed and harmed Joshua on his walk back from the bar.

As most know, this is the 3rd young man to disappear under similar circumstances in a short time period. Justin Gaines was last seen at Wild Bill’s in Duluth, GA on Thursday night, November 1st. Kyle Fleischmann disappeared from Buckhead Saloon in Charlotte, NC in the early morning hours of Friday morning (was at the club also on a Thursday night) on 11/9/7.

It reminded me of the Midwest mystery where some say a serial killer was or is still on the loose. All the young men were college students, all disappearing from bars in the early hours of the morning. Bodies were found of some, some were never found at all. Some think the serial killer is a man that travels on business. Many of the boy’s families are convinced that something is going on and that the disappearances of their loved ones are connected to others.

I personally am not feeling this in the case of Joshua. I do think he has met with foul play indeed and in my opinion I think he may have been made to drive the stolen SUV, he wrecked and something bad happened after that.

Police are continuing to search the Hudson River and volunteers have searched and retraced the complete route from the bar to where his cell phone was found, with no additional evidence of what happened to Joshua Szostak.

As for Justin Gaines and Kyle Fleischmann, I am still on the fence about whether their disappearances may connected, and will stay that way until more evidence would indicate so. However, I do believe it’s apparent that they have met with foul play as well.

Analyzing the Surveillance Video of Kyle Fleischmann

Posted by KindraLore on December 27, 2007

Update 12/28/07 9:45Pm

I decided to take down the video stills since its not Kyle and I felt it silly and confusing to keep up. I want to thank “Just Me” for clearing up the whole ordeal.

Update 12/18/07 12:07PM

According to a poster here the said video is not even Kyle. Kyle was wearing a black shirt. This was to help identify people there that evening. I apologize for the confusion of this post but I will let in stand in hopes to bring attention to this case.

While no new information has came out in the disappearance of 24-year-old Kyle Fleishmann from the Buckhead Saloon in the early morning hours of November 9th, police released a video surveillance tape of the last few moments Kyle can be seen and accounted for.

Texas EquuSearch to Assist in Search for Justin Gaines

Posted by KindraLore on November 16, 2007

Tim Miller

Tim Miller (pictured), Director of Texas EquuSearch knows first hand about searching for missing loved ones, as his daughter Laura Miller, was abducted and murdered in North Galveston County in 1984.

Texas EquuSearch has been involved in the search for many people such as Natalee Holloway, Colton Clark and most recently Ben Stanford, the grandson of Alabama State Sen. Jim Preuitt who was found yesterday deceased in the woods in Villa Rica, GA.

Today Texas EquuSearch is searching for 18 year old Justin Gaines who was last seen on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at a club called Wild Bill’s in Duluth, Georgia and has not been seen or heard from since.

Anyone who has information on Justin’s whereabouts or if anyone has seen Justin is asked to call the Gwinnett County Police Department at 770-513-5300.[Article]

The Disappearance of Justin Gaines and Kyle Fleischmann – Possibly Connected?

Posted by KindraLore on November 15, 2007

Update 12/28/07

As pointed out to me in the blog Analyzing the Surveillance Video of Kyle Fleishmann, the man in this video in this video I thought was Kyle IS NOT Kyle. In other words, where I state that a blonde girl is touching his waist, etc.. that is not Kyle. Kyle can be seen in the video on for a brief moment, wearing a black shirt and walking past the blonde girl. To see the video of Kyle highlighted, go here and chose VIDEO: Surveillance Video Shows Missing Man Leaving Bar on the right hand side.

I do apologize for this confusing mistake as I try to make everything as accurate as possible here, but the article in which I obtained the information, was not clear or either I am dense. Again I do apologize.

Update 12/10/07 11:18AM

At a vigil for his son Sunday, Dick Fleishmann conceded that his son Kyle Fleishmann has more than likely been the victim of foul play and is deceased.

CMPD’s Missing Persons detectives have released a video of Kyle at the Buckhead Saloon the night of his disappearance. It shows Kyle standing at the doorway as if he is waiting on someone. A man approaches Kyle and they exchange words. A blonde girl then engages in conversation with him and they make their way to the door. They seem to know each other or at least have some previous encounter as she touches him around the waist at one point.Kyle’s father is hoping someone will come forward. “I can’t believe that there’s someone on that tape that doesn’t know something or at least help us better than we are today,” said Fleischmann. In the meantime, a surveillance video of Justin Gaines‘ last moments at Wild Bill’s has also been released.

Surveillance video from Wild Bill’s shows Gaines arrive and greet a couple of friends, then walk out of frame. A security guard told investigators he saw Gaines leave a few hours later.

Update 11/26/07 8:14PM

Today reports surface that Justin Gaines has an arrest warrant out for him for forgery (fake ID) and open container for an arrest on June 21st. What this has to do with Justin’s case if anything I am not sure. According to his stepfather, they were minor infractions and not enough to warrant Justin to disappear on his own.

As far as an update on Kyle Fleischmann – The reward has increased to $25,000. His family are organizing a vigil for this week.

Update 11/24/07 7:41PM

Members of the Georgia State Defense Force searched for missing 18 year old Justin Gaines today. The soldiers are part of an unpaid, volunteer force, and they have the training and experience needed to cover a lot of ground. No reports as of yet of what they have found if anything.

The family is frustrated at this point due to the fact that they state that some of Justin’s friends have been less than cooperative regarding Justin’s disappearance. I’m still confused as to what this means since I thought Justin was alone at the time of his disappearance. From what I have read, a couple friend of his drove him to Wild Bill’s but for some reason had to return home and Justin stayed. They told him that they would not be able to come back for him.

Another confusing aspect of the case is on Wild Bill’s website it states:

Last seen walking toward a car that he called his ride with 2 men standing by the car.

Reports also say he was seen in the parking lot of Barnacles with these same 2 men.

IF YOU AS MUCH AS SPOKE to him that night please contact Gwinnett Police.

However, I have not seen this information in any news article, nor on the site for Justin.

As for the search for Kyle Fleischmann, there have been no new developments as well. Last week hundreds of volunteers searched for Kyle in uptown Charlotte. Police previously took items from his home for search dogs to follow his scent with. However, as Thanksgiving has come and gone there are no new answers to either family in the disappearance of their sons.

Original Blog

I have been thinking about this and connecting these two in my mind. These are my thoughts and mine alone, but I cannot somehow wonder if the disappearances of Justin Gaines and Kyle Fleishchmann are not possibly connected.

As you see from the map, these two bars are approximately a 3 ½ hour drive.

Kyle Fleischmann is a 6’0″, 24-year-old male with brown hair. He has a muscular build and weighs approx. 180lbs.

Justin is described as being 5″11′ and 210 lbs with a muscular build. He has blue eyes and brown hair with a short buzz cut.

Looking at their pictures, they look very similar.

Justin is 18, Kyle 24. Both men reportedly stepped outside the bars they were in and made phone calls. Neither has been seen since.

Could there be a possible connection?

If you have information about Justin Gaines is asked to call the Gwinnett County Police Department at 770-513-5300.

If you have information about the whereabouts of Kyle Fleischmann is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
